Never would've thought it'd work.. but I'm kinda digging it.

I'd heard this song via a game I've been playing for awhile, and it wasn't until I'd watched the video that I realized all the guitar parts were being sung:

The band's called Van Canto and they're out of Germany. In that vid they had an orchestra to back them up, so I watched a few more to see what they were about. They call it A Capella hero metal and it's kinda neat. They have a drummer but all the guitar riffs and bass lines are sang.

They've got some cover stuff, including Metallica, Iron Maiden and Manowar. (Battery sounds good, but I couldn't stop giggling at the bald dude when I watched the video for it.) Mr. Bear kept waiting for them to throw in a 'praise Jesus,' but as far as I can tell it's not Jesus music.

Here's one of their originals, minus the orchestra:

Something different. Thought I'd share. =)

^ I'd have to hear it minus all the trappings of modern day digital fuckery.

I'm hella dubious of all this auto-tune bullshit making glorious sounds from mooks that could not otherwise carry a tune.

I hear ya. I ran across some old live footage, but the quality of the video was pretty awful.. not that it would prove much anyway. Just found the concept intriguing, I guess.

I kinda liked one of the comments from the page:
"Van Canto:

Guy #1: Hey, lets make a band!

Guy #2: But neither of us know how to play guitar!

Guy #1: Don't worry, i have a plan.."

There is some really good game music going on.
Are both of the videos for the same song?

I still dig some of the old stuff, too =)

This guy does amazing a capella covers... This one's Daft Punk, but he does a few metal ones too by bands like Cannibal Corpse, Periphery and Dimmu Borgir :D

For me for video game music it's hard to top FFX: To Zanarkand.

As for the A cappella metal. Not sure it's quite my thing. But hey at least it's something new and different. But I think my ipod can live without it.
