Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions.

I'm curious as to what you think that quote means.
I take it to mean that most people's opinions are formed by their environment and culture. The background from which we are born into highly influence our thoughts and opinions. It also implies that most people cannot have individual thoughts outside of their social forms without including the prejudices associated with that group.

[FONT=arial, helvetica] There is a kind of laughter that sickens the soul. Laughter when it is out of control: when it screams and stamps its feet, and sets the bells jangling in the next town. Laughter in all its ignorance and cruelty. Laughter with the seed of Satan in it. It tramples upon shrines; the belly-roarer. It roars, it yells, it is delirious: and yet it is as cold as ice. It has no humour. It is naked noise and naked malice.

I'll bet "Mervyn" was a nerd who only heard laughter when the other kids were making fun of him. That quote is something you'd likely find in a whacked out serial killer's memoirs.

He was an artist and an author. He illustrated books such as Alice in Wonderland and Treasure Island. His writings were similar to J.R.R. Tolkien with emphasis on fantasy fiction. I am not sure what context he used when giving this quote but to me it's an accurate depiction of cruel laughter at its worst. His descriptive quote sounds like a poem.

There is in fact no such thing as art for art's sake, art that stands above classes, art that is detached from or independent of politics. Proletarian literature and art are part of the whole proletarian revolutionary cause.

All but Death, can be Adjusted—

Death—unto itself—Exception—

He has a point. Have you ever been in a situation where you looked like crap and felt insecure? Or been dressed to kill and felt strong and superior? As silly as it sounds, if I wear my favorite heels that make a killer noise when I walk, I feel powerful.

If you adapt it to mean clothes as in character, strength of will, or purpose in life he is still right. A clothed man would be productive in society. A naked man would be someone without character and who has no strength or purpose. A waste to society.

I will go with you on that...but if read literally he's wrong. The Porn industry is hugely influential even to the point of the type of media we adapt (VCR v Beta Max and Blue Ray v Hi Def DVD) and they are almost always nekkid.
